Spinning 201 - Intermediate Spinning
Details:
Intermediate Spinning with Wheel Mechanics and Maintenance
Comfortable with your spinning, but want to take it to the next level? Do you think that you should be able to spin faster, or thinner, or thicker, or be more “in charge” of your wheel? Thinking that you just need a bit of a refresher course on how to spin woolen or worsted? We’ll look at these things, learn some tricks, and at a number of different types of wheels and how to get the most from them. Several different fibers will be supplied to work with as well as some wheels to try that you may not have used before.
Experience level: Able to spin a consistent singles yarn and comfortable with several types of fibers.
Materials fee: $20 paid to the instructor.
Instructor: Shelia January
Shelia January has been a knitter since she was eight years old and growing up on a farm in Oregon. She became a spinner over 25 years ago, has studied extensively in the US and Canada, and now collects spinning wheels as well as yarn. She knits and designs with her handspun yarn as well as with commercial yarn, and has taught spinning and knitting at retreats, shops, conferences and fiber festivals worldwide. Her writing and patterns have been published in The Knitter’s Book of Yarn, Fiber Gathering, The Knitter’s Book of Wool, Spin-Off and Ply Magazine.

Darn Pretty
Details:
We examine past and present methods of mending and darning knits with a cross cultural emphasis. Mending and making do we are all familiar with. Mending and darning have traditions that are far more ancient and of far more philosophical interest to craftspeople like ourselves. For a different perspective, we look at old textiles and diagrams found in old books. I teach several old and new mending techniques including my own knitted patch mend, discuss how to access damage, and decide the appropriate technique.
