Red Alder Fiber Arts Retreat - Feb. 16-19, 2023
The ACHG Sheep to Shawl team will be demonstrating at the retreat.
Sheep to Shawl Event
This is a competition that is very popular at fiber events. It is growing rapidly within the spinning communities throughout the United States with great public interest.
Teams come together to compete in making a handwoven shawl using handspun yarn within a 4 hour time frame. Teams generally have 6 to 7 team members that will take a washed fleece through the complete process of carding the wool, spinning, plying and weaving to produce an adult size shawl. The teams are made up of 1 person to card, 3 spinners, 1 plyer, 1 weaver and 1 education ambassador.
The ambassador's role is to engage the public and educate them about how woven fabric is made. They explain the various pieces of equipment used by the team and have a display of the various types of wool. A shawl from previous events is also available to get up close to see and feel a finished product.
